McTague captained Offaly to the All-Ireland title in 1972. McTague was inducted into the Gaelic Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2013.

He played Gaelic football with his local club Ferbane and was a member of the Offaly senior inter-county team from 1965 until 1975.
