Torry Castellano is an American attorney and former drummer of The Donnas. She helped form the band as a teenager, recorded and toured with it from 1993 until shoulder tendonitis ended her performing career in 2010, then studied political science at Stanford and law at Harvard. She works as a post-conviction attorney in Texas.
Background
Torrance Heather Castellano was born on January 8, 1979, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Palo Alto. Her mother was a therapist, her stepfather worked in the computer field, and her father worked for nonprofit organizations.
Castellano met Maya Ford, Brett Anderson, and Allison Robertson in junior high school. In the eighth grade they formed Ragady Anne, later renamed The Electrocutes at Palo Alto High School, before developing the band identity that became The Donnas. As Donna C., Castellano performed with the group while its members maintained separate stage names based on the first letters of their surnames.
Education
Castellano attended Santa Monica College before transferring to Stanford University, where she studied political science and graduated with distinction in 2013. Santa Monica College is a public community college in Southern California that provides lower-division and transfer education. Stanford, founded in 1885 in the San Francisco Bay Area, combines broad undergraduate study with strong traditions in research and public service.
She entered Harvard Law School in 2013 and received her Juris Doctor in 2017. Harvard Law School, founded in 1817, is one of the oldest law schools in the United States and has long combined legal scholarship, professional training, clinical education, and public-interest work. During her legal studies, Castellano participated in human-rights research and clinical activities, including work connected with international humanitarian concerns.
Castellano began performing with The Donnas in 1993, when the group developed from the Palo Alto teenage bands Ragady Anne and The Electrocutes. The Donnas became known for a guitar-driven blend of punk, garage rock, hard rock, and pop, and released recordings through independent and major-label contexts including Lookout! and Atlantic. Castellano played drums and contributed backing vocals on the band's albums and tours.
Before the release of Gold Medal, Castellano developed tendonitis and underwent surgery in October 2003. During her recovery she relearned drum technique, and she recorded for Gold Medal while still able to play only for limited periods. Continuing shoulder problems forced her to withdraw from touring after a December 27, 2008 performance at the House of Blues in Anaheim; Amy Cesari subsequently filled the touring role.
On July 9, 2010, Castellano announced her retirement from drumming and performing with The Donnas because of the continuing shoulder injury. She later redirected her professional life toward law. At Harvard Law School she interned with Adalah, the Habeas Corpus Resource Center, and Article 36, and contributed to the International Human Rights Clinic and PAX report Operating under Fire, which examined civilian protection and legal issues arising from armed conflict.
Castellano is a post-conviction attorney at the Texas Office of Capital and Forensic Writs in Austin. The office provides specialized legal representation and litigation support in capital and other post-conviction cases, placing her current work within the public-defense and criminal-justice systems.
Achievements
Castellano helped form The Donnas during eighth grade and remained the group's drummer and backing vocalist through its development from Palo Alto teenage bands into a nationally touring rock act.
She contributed as a student researcher and writer to Operating under Fire, a Harvard Law School International Human Rights Clinic and PAX report on civilian protection and legal conditions in conflict-affected areas.
After retiring from professional drumming because of chronic shoulder tendonitis, Castellano completed a transition from music into public-interest legal work and post-conviction defense.
