In 1913 Haneda Toru was appointed assistant professor at Kyoto University. In 1914 he went to Russia. He was later appointed professor and won his doctorate in 1922. He became dean of the Literature School, Kyoto University in 1932 and later president of the university. An authority on the history of Asia, especially Central Asia.
