Toru Umehara was born in Fukui Prefecture in 1865 in the family of a priest of Sukyoji Temple of the Shinshu Sect.
Toru Umehara graduated from Literature Department of Keio University (1894).
In 1894, began teaching religion at the school within Honganji Temple for five years. Founded a junior commercial school at Kakigara-cho, Nihonbashi, Tokyo (1900). Later founded and became chief director of Chuo Commercial School (1903) and also taught at Keio University.
