Tory Burch sees the world in color, inspired by people, places, and ideas—all of which influence her brand, synonymous with print and color. In her first book, she explores what living in color means to her. The book is organized by color, each one brought to life through images of her own collections and travels; how she entertains; style icons; the works of artists, authors, and interior designers she admires; and the advice of business leaders—many of whom are interviewed within. The book also offers a glimpse into the more personal moments in Tory’s life, such as family trips with her boys or the indelible ways in which her parents, Buddy and Reva Robinson, influenced her collection, company, and philosophy.
Tory Burch is a fashion designer and philanthropist who created a multi-million dollar lifestyle brand which goes by her name in a short period of time. She is the Chairman, CEO, and Designer of Tory Burch LLC.
Background
Daughter of Reva (née Schapira) and Ira Earl "Bud" Robinson, Mrs. Burch was born in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, United States, on June 15, 1966. She was raised with her three brothers (Robert, James and Leonard) in a Valley Forge farmhouse, a 250-year-old Georgian near the Valley Forge National Historical Park. Her father was a wealthy investor who inherited a stock exchange seat and a paper cup company. He dated Grace Kelly and Joan Bennett before marrying Reva, an actress who had dated both Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando.
Education
Tory Burch attended the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, where she was captain of the tennis team, and was a friend of jewelry designer Kara Ross. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta. She majored in art history, and graduated in 1988.
Mrs. Burch got her first job at Benetton at the King of Prussia Mall. While studying at the university, she also honed her PR by working with various designers such as Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren and Narciso Rodriguez. After graduating from college, Tory Burch moved to New York City, where she worked for Zoran, a Yugoslavian designer, followed by Harper's Bazaar magazine. She then moved into public relations and advertising positions at Vera Wang, Polo Ralph Lauren and Loewe when Narciso Rodriguez was there.
In 2004, she began her own fashion label, initially known as TRB by Tory Burch and later just Tory Burch. The company now has hundred stores around the world. Fashion collection by Mrs. Burch is shelved at more than thousand stores in the world, including Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Neriman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Tory Burch’s flagship boutique is in Manhattan’s neighborhood, NoLita.
In 2005, her collection was endorsed on The Oprah Winfrey Show by Oprah Winfrey. In 2009, minority stakeholders were added to her company. Tory Burch’s style of fashion is described as preppie and bohemian. Moreover, her fashion lines have been known for versatility and comfort. Her trend was en vogue in 2007, so much so that people waited to buy her collection. Mrs. Burch’s inspirations come from her parents’ unique style as well as from her love for travel, culture, music and art. All this is reflected in her collections. Bold hues, graphical prints and exclusive detailing are her brand’s signature.
Apart from her fashion infused life, she is known to be an active philanthropist. In 2008, Tory Burch was honored at a luncheon by Colleague Helpers in Philanthropic Services. In 2009, she established Tory Burch Foundation that envisioned to support women’s economic empowerment in the United States via small loans for business, and for entrepreneurial and mentoring education. She is also a partner of ACCION USA. Moreover, she is among the board of directors at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
In 2014, the foundation launched Elizabeth Street Capital, an initiative with Bank of America, to provide women entrepreneurs with access to low-cost loans, mentoring support and networking opportunities. The initiative, originally named for the location of the first Tory Burch boutique, is now known as the Tory Burch Foundation Capital program. As of November 2017, Bank of America had committed a total of $50 million to the program.
In 2015 Mrs. Burch also introduced a separate performance activewear line, Tory Sport, with a dedicated website and a pop-up shop. A stand-alone store on Fifth Avenue in New York, as well as boutiques in East Hampton and Dallas, were opened in 2016. As of late 2017 Tory Sport has stores in several cities around the U.S. and an in-store boutique at the Tory Burch store in Hong Kong.
In March 2017, to coincide with International Women's Day and Women's History Month, the Tory Burch Foundation launched Embrace Ambition, a global campaign to address the double standard that exists around ambition, which is often seen as a positive trait in men and a negative one in women. The campaign includes a video PSA featuring a variety of celebrities, both women and men. In April 2018 Mrs. Burch and her foundation hosted the first Embrace Ambition Summit, an all-day event supporting women’s ambition and examining stereotypes about women and ambition in the workplace, at Lincoln Center in New York and also viewable on the Tory Burch Foundation website.
