Career
According to the story titled Utsubo Mono- gatari, Kiyohara^ ship meets with a mishap while he is on his way to China as an envoy from the Japanese court. After floating about in the sea, he finds himself in a strange land called Hashi, where he meets with an unearthly character who teaches him to play the Koto (Japanese harp). The story says that Kiyohara returns home after 23 years and his music creates a stir and wins him a patron in no less a person than the Emperor. Later, according to the legend, he retired to Sanjo-Kyogoku at Kyoto, after teaching his wife the secrets he learnt at Hashi. There are many versions of this legend.
