Toshiko Nakajima was born in 1863 in Kyoto, Japan.
Served at the Imperial Court before she started feminist activities. Was once jailed on account of such activities. In 1885 went to Tokyo and mingled with Jiyuto (Liberal) Party politicians and married one of them, Nobuyuki Nakajima. She was superintendent of the Ferris Girls' School in Yokohama. Accompanied her husband to Italy when he was appointed minister to that country. A versatile woman, she was well known for her pseudonym of Shoen Joshi.
