Tosshi VIII Sawamura made his debut at Asakusa Theater under stage name of Daisuke (1897). For his good looks enjoyed great popularity as idol of small theater audiences from end of Meiji through Taisho eras.
He succeeded his father-in-law to hereditary stage name of Tosshi (becoming Tosshi VIII) (1927). Thereafter made regular appearances at large theaters and figured for many years as supporting actor in Shinsakumono (newly produced dramas, meaning specifically those produced in modern times as distinguished from those handed down from feudal days) with Sadanji Ichikawa.
Transferred after the war to Kansai Kabuki where he is held in high esteem.
