Toten Miyazaki was born in 1870(1) in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.
He was baptized a Christian while attending Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University).
After graduation moved to Shanghai in 1891. Later left for Siam as an emigrant and began a farm and lumbering business in 1895. His business, however, tailed and he returned home.
Shortly after he came to the notice of Tsuyoshi Inukai, who sent him to South China to investigate the Chinese revolutionary party. In China he became a friend of Sun Yat-sen. It was about this time that he also assisted Emilio Aguinaldo in his movement for Philippine independence. Later he returned to China and brought about a meeting between Huanghsing and Sun Yat-sen, which resulted in the forming of China Alliance Association, for which he acted as adviser. Was also well versed in naniwa-bushi, which he recited under the name of Ushiemon Tochuken.
