He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was awarded Bachelor in 1898 and Bachelor's Degree in 1901.

He was ordained a deacon in 1900 and priest in 1901. He was made a temporary chaplain to the forces on 12 October 1915 and served as Chaplain to the 2nd Guards Brigade. He described the harrowing ordeal of preparing a deserter for his execution after his trial in 1916 in letters written home to his family.
He was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in 1916.
He relinquished this commission on 1 January 1917. He was appointed a Chaplain to the King in 1918.
