(To the Navajo, sandpaintings are sacred, living entities ...)
To the Navajo, sandpaintings are sacred, living entities that reflect the interconnectedness of all living beings - humans, plants, stars, animals, and mountains. This book, now available in paperback, explores the circularity of Navajo thought in sandpaintings, Navajo chant way myths, and stories reflected in the celestial constellations. Griffin-Pierce shows how the images of sacred sandpaintings not only communicate the temporal and spatial dimensions of the Navajo universe but also present, in visual form, Navajo ideas about relationships among nature, self, and society.

(For most of the twentieth century, a great intellectual b...)
For most of the twentieth century, a great intellectual barrier existed in the literature about American Indians. Almost every book on the subject recounted the history, culture, religion, and art of a tribe as they were from the first contact with Europeans to 1890. Trudy Griffin-Pierce has marched into the field with a new concept-that of matching historical native American traditions with the modern expressions of those traditions as people live them today. Covering the traditional culture areas, she brings a new dimension to the old data by showing systematically how the different tribes have brought their dances, ceremonies, and customs into the modern world with them.

This comprehensive look at Native American groups in the southwestern United States is one of the first to provide both ethnographic research and Native American viewpoints. It explores each group's environmental adaptation, linguistic affiliation, social organization, history, world view, material culture, and ceremonial institutions. Native Americans speak about contemporary issues such as the repatriation of sacred objects, reservation gambling, preservation of native plants, and the philosophy behind tribal colleges.
