Tsubara Koide first took interest in painting, which he studied under Kampo Araki.
Tsubara Koide was skilled at military exercises and a champion of spear drill. Later, he gave up both painting and military training for poetry and was appointed chief poet to Imperial Court (1877).
His light and clever style won mm great praise even from his contemporary poets.
