Tsubone Kasuga was appointed as a nurse to Iemitsu Tokugawa and it is said that when Hidetada intended to make Kunichiyo, Iemitsu's younger brother, heir to the Shogunate, she brought the matter to the notice of Ieyasu who admonished Hidetada. When Iyemitsu became Shogun he treated her with due respect and placed his household affairs in her charge. She was later granted the title by which she is known today by Emperor Gomino-o.
