Tsubone Okurakyo was born on June 4, 1615.
In 1614, Ieyasu Tokugawa accused Hideyori of an intention to get rid of him on the ground that an inscription on a large bell, which Hideyori caused to be cast for the Hokoji Temple, contained the two ideographs representing the name of Ieyasu in such a way as to signify his downfall. At the order of Yodogimi, widow of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Okurakyo-no-Tsubone called Ieyasu at Sumpu (Shizuoka) and explained that the Toyotomis had no such intention. Ieyasu told her that he did not suspect such an intention merely because of the bell inscription. Ieyasu, however told Katsumoto Katagiri, a chief retainer of the Toyotomis who was also sent to Sumpu to convey Hideyori's s apologies regarding the inscriptioion, that the objectional part of the inscnption should be erased. Katsumoto and Okurakyo-no-Tsubone returned to Osaka together. Yodogimi and chieftains in Osaka Castle believed that Ieyasu did not harbor a grudge about the inscription on the bell, on the basis of Okurakyo-no-Tsuboe's report. They thought Katsumoto was lying when he reported that Ieyasu wanted to hav.e the inscription erased without suspecting Ieyasu's double dealing. Katsumoto was discredited and retired to his territory. The incident led to the Osaka Battle which sealed the fate of the Toyotomis.
