Tsune-emon Ishii was born in 1660.
Tsune-emon Ishii was a retainer of Lord Ii in Edo and to have been much favored by his master. Other retainers were jealous of him, in particular another samurai named Sachuta Shindo. It is said that the latter aimed to get him insulted at the Yoshiwara gay quarters, but a faithful servant of Tsune-emon got wind of this and begged a noted geisha named Takaodayii to fie specially kind to his master. When his master came there she gave him a great reception and even presented him with an incense box. This is said to have infuriated Sachuta Shindo who then planned to kill him on the borders of the Yoshiwara. In the subsequent fight however, Tsune-emon killed him. Some records show that Tsune-emon was actually Kichibe Ishii, known as Gensei, a Buddhist priest belonging to the Nichiren sect.
