Tsunekichi Oba learned Japanese drawing from Kampo Araki and began the study of patterns in ancient times. Served at his alma mater (1908) and went to Korea and engaged in studying historic spots as a non regular member of the museum, Government-General of Korea (1916). He returned to the Tokyo Academy of Arts and opened his lectures on the history of patterns of Japan. After the war, was professor of the Tokyo University of Arts (until 1953).
