He served as a Court painter for three emperors (Daigo, Suzaku, Murakami). Ranked equally with another painter of his time, Kose-no-Kimmochi. Painted murals on the southern wall of the west wing of the Seiryoden Hall in the Palace in 962. Tradition says that he once painted such a lifelike lion that dogs barked at it.
