He was one of the main researchers contributing to the development of optical fiber technology. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering in 1953 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1961, both in electrical engineering, from the University of Tokyo. He did his post-doc at Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
Nakahara has long been active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Life Fellow and has served in a number of positions.
He has been a foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering and a member of the Board of Trustees of Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
