Education
Began his studies at the age of 15 under the guardianship of Mokichi Fujita at Keio Gijuku.
Career
Later was a reporter for Hochi Shimlmn and sided with the army during the Seinan Affair (1877) as a member of Shigenobu Okuma's party. Elected member of Diet (1890) and since then became active in politics. Minister of Education in Kense Cabinet (1898) and later took part in founding the Riklcen Kckuminto (constitutional national) Party and became its leader. Opposed the Katsura Cabinet for protecting constitutional politics (1913). Organized Kakushin Kurabu (reformation) party (1922). Minister of Communications in Kato Cabinet (1923). Joined the Seiiyukai Party and succeedea Guchi Tanaka as its leader (1929). Prime Minister (1931). Was assassinated by young officers in the uprising of the May 15,1932 incident. After this incident the militarists began rising in power.
