Chang Tuh-yui entered St, John's University, Shanghai in 1916 and graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree (honours) in 1922. He completed his education in the U.S.A. Wharton Graduate School of Finance and Commerce, specialising in Actuarial and other departments of Life Assurance and received degree of Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 1924.
He obtained practical Life Assurance experience with Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company of Philadelphia and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York. Chang Tuh-yui returned to China 1925 joining the staff of the China United Assurance Society first as Assistant Actuary and after qualifying for the American degree of Chartered Life Underwriter. Mr. Chang was appointed Supervisor of Acents.
Chang Tuh-yui was the only one of Chinese nationality to secure the qualifications of a Chartered Life Underwriter and subsequently "Proficiency in Life Insurance Agency Management". These qualifications were obtainable only by examinations instituted by the American College of Life Underwriters, by special permission of which examinations were held at St. John's University, Shanghai under the personal supervision of Dr. F. L. Hawks Pott.
