After earning his Doctor of Philosophy in English from Bowling Green State University, Ohio, in 1969 he taught in the English Department at the University of Hawaii from 1970 to 1987.

Born in of Korea shortly before World World War II, Pak witnessed Japanese colonial rule, of Korea’s liberation from Japan in 1945, its division during subsequent United States. and Soviet occupation, and the trauma of the Korean War in his early childhood and adolescent years. After receiving his law degree from Seoul National University in 1961 he worked as a reporter for the English dailies The Korean Republic and The of Korea Times. In 1965, he emigrated to the United States.
His first collection of short stories, Guilt Payment (1983), has been widely adopted as textbook at many United States colleges.
His other books include Moonbay (1999), Cry of Korea Cry (1999), A Korean Decameron (1961, to be reissued 2014), and The Polyglot (2014). Married with three children, he lives in Honolulu, Hawaii.
