Tynia Thomassie was born on September 1, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. She is the daughter of Clarence Ray Thomassie and Mireya Ponce. Thomassie spent most of her childhood with her Cajun French Grampa Clarence, Irish Gramma Netta, and Aunt Shirley, all positive influences who created what she called “her haven and heaven.”
Thomassie graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor's degree in 1980. She also attended the American Conservatory Theatre advanced acting program and New York University Continuing Education program and the New School, studying film production and children’s book illustration.
After pursuing acting with some success throughout her early twenties, Thomassie started working as a lecturer on children’s book writing. She now teaches technology integration to teachers in West Orange, New Jersey and works as a life coach at Q Process Coach Company.
During her career, she has also served on the Unity of Montclair Board of Trustees.

Thomassie married Michael Schmith on April 3, 1984. Three years later, however, the marriage ended in a divorce and Thomassie married Dave Stryker on April 20, 1991. The couple has 2 children: Matthew Stryker and William Stryker.
