In his youth Udo Georgievich Ivask studied painting under the guidance of the remarkable artist K.A. Korovin, but also in the students he liked books. He began to study the history of the book, genealogy. Thesis defended on "From the field of merchant genealogy" and received the title of scientist-archivist.
Udo Georgievich Ivask was engaged in the study of incunabula - when describing it he gave a historico-bibliographic text, an index of literature and illustrations. He collected bibliographic information about 205 newspapers and magazines from the "Polar Star" to the publications of 1917.
In the First World War Udo Georgievich supplied hospitals with books. In addition he was an editor of the "Book Chronicle". He was one of the organizers of the Russian Central Book Chamber, the Russian Bibliographic Institute, and later the head of the Rumyantsev Museum's rare publications department.
In 1920, Udo Georgievich left for Yuriev (Tartu) and there he worked as an assistant to the chief librarian of the university library.
Udo Georgievich wrote more than 20 bibliographic essays about the authors of the book, a large number of articles and reviews on bibliography and library science. In the manuscript remained "Introduction to the history of Russian bibliography", an essay "Vladimir Izmaylovich Mezhov", etc. From 1902 to 1922, he wrote more than 80 works that are highly appreciated by specialists for their extraordinary accuracy, they still retain their scientific significance.
Udo Georgievich took part in the work of numerous scientific associations, in the special society’s organization of lovers of bookmarks, established in 1917, in the work of the Russian bibliophile society, at Moscow University.
