1901 graduate Kiev Theological Seminary. Also studied at Khar’kov Higher Teachers’ Training Courses.
1904 ordained priest and appointed vicar of village Kokhanovka, Podol’ye. Later held vicarages of Zhmerinka and Gaysina and taught the catechism at local schools. 1913 became a widower.
1914 chaplain, 259th Infantry Regt and 65th Division. 1917 dean, Gaysina Cathedral. April 1917 advocated autocephality for Ukraine Orthodox Church at Congress of Kamencts-Podol'sk and began using the Ukraine language in church services in his parish.
1918 forbidden to conduct holy rites but continued his parish work. 1922 ordained Bishop of Gaysina on recommendation of Ecclesiastical Congress held there in previous year. Forbidden by Soviet authorities to tour his diocese and preach.
1927, after elevation to archbishop, ordained Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine at 2nd AU-Ukraine Synod. 1930 arrested by StateSecurity organs.
