Ulf Ohrling was born in 1957. His training and early career took place in Sweden, where he studied law and then entered the business law profession.
Ohrling studied law at the University of Uppsala and received a Bachelor of Laws, Candidate of Law degree in 1984. Founded in 1477 through a papal bull, Uppsala is the oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries, and its founding privileges allowed four traditional faculties, including law.
Near the end of his studies he taught labour law and wrote an applied thesis on the subject. This background made a move to a firm handling labour matters a natural step in his career. He also held a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Ohrling began his legal career on 1 February 1991 at Lagerlöf & Leman, a firm formed in 1990 through the merger of a Stockholm practice and a Gothenburg practice led by Philip Leman. He later described it as the country's largest law firm at the time, and it merged with the British firm Linklaters in 2001. He had been recruited to work on labour law. He later recalled that his first months coincided with the financial crisis of the early 1990s, when the firm helped banks and property companies manage sharply falling asset values.
In 1992 two groups of partners left Lagerlöf & Leman to found Gernandt & Danielsson, and Ohrling followed them as an associate lawyer. In the years that followed he worked on mergers and acquisitions, joint venture agreements, corporate law, competition law, and disputes.
Ohrling later spent roughly thirty years in total at Advokatfirman Vinge and at Mannheimer Swartling, where he was a partner. Vinge describes itself as Sweden's leading full-service business law firm, with offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Brussels. Mannheimer Swartling was formed on 1 July 1990 through a merger between Mannheimer & Zetterlöf and Carl Swartling Advokatbyrå and is today regarded as the leading business law firm in the Nordic region.
Ohrling has been active in China since 2004 and is based in Hong Kong. From 2019 he has conducted consulting work through his own consultancy, Ohrling Advisory Ltd. He has since ended his legal career.
