Since 1972 Welsch has been a staff photographer with the Boston Globe, for which she also writes a monthly photography column, and since 1966 has also been a staff photographer for the Boston Herald Traveler. In addition, she taught photojournalism at Essex Photographic Workshop in Essex and at Harvard University Center for Lifelong Learning in Cambridge, both in Massachusetts.
The photographer describes her work as creative photojournalism. She likes to photograph people in common places and portray a touch of life. In 1978-79 she spent seven months in South America photographing the people of the Andes.
