Umehara Ryuzaburo was born on March 9, 1888, in Kyoto, Japan to a family of merchants who dealt with kimonos.

Umehara Ryuzaburo revealed his painting talent at the early age. He did his studies at the high school in Kyoto but left it in order to become a painter. To fulfil this goal, Ryuzaburo joined the atelier of Ito Yoshihiko in 1903 and began to attend the Syogoin Western-style Painting’s Institute.
Three years later, Umehara entered the Kansai Art School called Kansai Bijutsuin where he was taught by Asai Chu.
In 1908, the young artist made his first trip to France where he studied for some time at the Académie Julian.
While in the capital of France, he visited the Musée du Luxembourg where he explored the works of a French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir which impressed him a lot. Ryuzaburo decided to find the painter in order to pay to him his respects. So, in February 1909 the young artist went to Cagnes-sur-Mer in the south of France and met Renoir.
The latter was surprised by Ryuzaburo’s courage and agreed to give him lessons. Umehara Ryuzaburo had studied under the tutelage of Renoir till 1913.
In 1913, Umehara Ryuzaburo came back to Japan with his paintings created during his stint in France. These creations gave the artist his first popularity.
While in Japan, Ryuzaburo founded and participated at the creation of several art groups, among which were Shunyou Society (Shunyou-kai), Kokuga-kai, the Nikakai (1914, Tokyo), the Shuń yōkai (1922), the Yasui and Umehara’s time (along with Yasui Sotaro).
In 1933, the artist visited Taiwan where he had taken part in the Taiwan Art Exhibition as a judge from 1934 till 1936.
In the post-war period, Ryuzaburo made some trips to France and remained to paint the Japanese and French landscapes.
In 1943, the artist became a professor in Tokyo School of Fine Arts and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He had occupied the post for nine years.
