Umesh Prasad

Background

Umesh was born in a Hindu family in May 1965s at Ghorasahan (Bihar), in India and is the second of four brothers. His father, Yadavalal Prasad, was a cloth merchant and his mother, Bhagmani Devi, a home maker. His family has a background in trading. He went to local schools in Ghorasahan and Raxaul. He studied for honours degree in physics at Ranchi College. Subsequently, he attended Government Dental Hospital and College, Chennai under Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University to qualify as a dental surgeon. He also holds an M.Phil. in hospital and health systems management from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and a MSc in International Health Policy from London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). He migrated to the United Kingdom in 2006 for higher study where he settled down after completion of study and subsequently naturalised as a British citizen in 2014. Umesh has an extensive professional background as a doctor and an educator. He founded Scientific European, an open-access science and technology magazine, which he serves as the Editor-in-Chief since its inception in 2018. He had married Neelam, a longtime friend from the dental school in Madras. The marriage sustained from 1999 to 2022. They have a son named Neelesh Prasad who is also a science journalist. Umesh is a science enthusiast, a nationalist, an admirer of Buddhism.
