Ümit Hergüner received a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985 and Master of Laws from Washington College of Law, The American University in 1984. He was admitted to the bar in 1980.
From 1985 to 1988 Ümit Hergüner was a special counsel on foreign law at Reid & Priest, New York City. In 1989 he was appointed as a local representative at Reid & Priest, Istanbul. He worked there till 1991. Hergüner also served as a partner at Sayman & Hergüner and Hergüner, Bilgen, Paksoy & Gürcan.
