Usen Ogawa was born on March 11, 1868.
At first Ogawa Usen was initiated into Western painting by Kingoro Honda but later turned to Japanese painting. Residing near Ushiku Lake, Ibaraki Prefecture, he liked to paint marshland scenery. Many pictures by him are peopled with Joappa (water imps) His works, featured by an ultramundane atmosphere, are appreciated as the best bunjinga (pictures by men of letters). He was also a good calligrapher.
He was also one of the eight original members of the Sango-kai, founded in 1915, which fostered a free exchange of ideas between the Western-style and Japanese-style painters in the group.
