Hale was raised in Orem, Utah graduating from Orem High School. He worked as a reporter and columnist for the Provo Daily Herald. He later worked at Brigham Young University in marketing and later as men"s athletic director
Hale succeeded Rondo Fehlberg as director of men"s athletics at Brigham Young University. After he left Brigham Young University in 2004 he became assistant vice president of external affairs at Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University).
