LUKA, Valentin was born in 1877.
Studied painting at Kiev Art School. 1903 graduate Medical Faculty, Kiev University.
Head. Chair of Surgery, Kiev University. 1915 director, Pereyaslavl’-Zalcsskiy Military Hospital. 1917 chief surgeon of a Tashkent hospital.
1919 became a widower and took monastic orders with the name Luka. 1920 professor, Tashkent University. 1921 elevated to priest and 1923 to Bishop of Tashkent and Turkestan.
1923 exiled to Yeniseysk for criticizing Bolshevik regime, then exiled to Turkhansk, where he practised medical. With start of World War 2 chief surgeon, Krasnoyarsk evacuation hospitals. Fall 1942 elevated to archibishop and given the Krasnoyarsk Eparchy with special dispensation to continue surgical practice.
Famed throughout Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics for his brilliant operation technique. 1944 appointed Bishop of Tambov and Michurinsk. 1954 elected Honorary member, Moscow Theological Academy.
