Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School.
Career
Dancer with the Mariinskii Theatre, 1895-1909. Character dancer. Follower of M. M. Fokin. Taught plasticity and stage movement at the Petersburg Conservatory, 1904.
Professorship from 1914. Important contribution to musical and choreographic training after 1917. Founded the People’s Conservatory of Vitebsk, and courses in rhythmic dance following the system of Jacques-Dalcroze, 1919.
Taught at the Institute for Music and Drama in Odessa, 1924-1932. Choreographer and teacher at the Erevan Opera, and founder of its ballet company, 1933-1938. Artistic director and teacher in the Choreography Department of the Voronezh Music School, 1938-1942.
