Education
Studied at chiefly in France and Germany. Bachelier-£s-lettres of the University of Paris. Clerk in the Foreign Office, 1872-1876.
Career
Travelled extensively in European and Asiatic Turkey, Egypt, Persia, and the Far East, as well as in the United States and the British colonies. Resided for some years in Berlin as correspondent of the Times. Succeeded Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace as Director of the Foreign Department of the Times, 1899. Director of the Foreign Department of tlie Times.
