1901-1905 studied at Natural Sciences Department, Physics and Mathematics Faculty, Khar’kov University, from which he was expelled for participation in revol movement.
1905 — 11 exiled in Narym, then imprisoned. From 1911 taught in Moscow. From 1917 taught and did research work.
From 1918 member, Socialist (later Communist) Academy. From 1921 professor, Moscow University. In 1920’s contributed to journals “Pechat' i revolutsiya” and “Lileratura i marksizm”.
1929-1930 together with Lunacharskiy, edited “Literaturnaya entsiklopediya” (Literary Encyclopedia). In Moscow trained a group of lit historians, subsequently criticized during 1929-1930 controversy. Pcrcverzev and his supporters were accused of revising Marxism in lit history.
Specialized in Russian realistic prose of the 19th Century. Attempted to study the lit process on the basis of historical- materialistic sociology. 1938 arrested and imprisoned in concetra- tion camps for “vulgar sociologism” in lit studies.
After rehabilitation in 1956 concentrated primarily on ancient Russian lit.
Religion is bad because it forces people to rely on outside authority, rather than becoming self-reliant.
Every Soviet citizen has rights to express his or her opinion, but it should be in accordance with the general interests of the society.
