In 1816 he presented a thesis in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. He was sent abroad at the expense of the university to improve his knowledge. Goorsky visited Germany, Holland and England within 4 years. He listened to the course of lectures at the polytechnic school, and to the other special courses in France. After returning from abroad in 1821 Valerian taught practical mechanics and sciences connected with the construction of roads, bridges and canals. I. Dameika was one of his pupils. Goorsky made a lot of efforts to the work of mechanic office, where he was a direcror before the closing down an university. He built the boulevard above the river Wileika near Bekishava mountain in 1821. Under a commission of the authorities he did mechanical and hydrological works in St. Petersburg and its environs in 1823. Valerian built a suspension bridge on chains over the river Bileizy in 1829. When the university was closed down Goorsky moved to Warsaw in 1832, where he obtained the position in the technical department of governmen commission. Goorsky was a member of a construction council, a referent in a statistic service. Goorsky left his work and returned to Wilnya, he retired in 1850 . In Wilnya he had a rich library about (посвященную) the history of Wilensky University, in due time he had inherited that library (it) together with the house from his relation Palinsky.
