Became involved in the human rights movement in the mid-1960s. Editor of Obshchestvennye Problemy, 1969-1972. Founding member of the Human Rights Committee (together with Andrei Sakharov and A. Tverdokhlebov).
Left the USSR for the USA on a lecture tour, 1972 and was stripped
of Soviet citizenship. Settled in Vermont. Founder and editor of Khronika Press and Chalidze Publications. Editor of SSSR - Vnutrennie Protivorechiia.
