Valter Runeberg studied photography at his father's studio in 1952.
A freelance photographer since 1969, Valter Runeberg has worked for such magazines as Pirkka and Me Naiset and for the Finnish Red Cross. Since 1979 his work has appeared in the Sunday pages of Finland's biggest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. Valter Runeberg originally began freelancing in 1958, and from 1965 to 1969 was a founding member of Finnseven, a cooperative photographers' union.
Valter Runeberg belonged to the Union of Journalists in Finland (SSL), the International Federation of Journalists in Brussels (since 1969) and the Finnish Press Photographers Society.
