He is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Professor of Systems Biology and Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and is based in the Department of Molecular Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a 2004 recipient of the Macarthur Foundation "genius award" for his contributions to mitochondrial biology and genomics. He was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2014.
Mootha received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematical and Computational Science from Stanford University and his Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University.
He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women"s Hospital in Boston, and then pursued postdoctoral training at the Whitehead Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Genome Research.
He is also a Senior Associate Member of the Broad Institute.
