Monk, 1886. Bishop of Samara, 1891. Head of the Georgian Exarchate, 18 October 1892. Metropolitan of Moscow, 1988 Metropolitan of Petersburg, 1912.
Because of his disapproval of Rasputin, removed from the capital to the Ukraine. Metropolitan of Kiev, 1915. Murdered by Bolshevik sailors near the Kiev Cave Monastery.
Considered to be the first of the modern martyrs of the Russian Orthodox Church.
