Education

Graduated from the Lenin Military Political Academy, 1937.

Career

Political officer in the Red Army during World War II. 1st secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Georgia, 1953-1972. Non-voting member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1957-1966, and of the Politburo, 1966-1972. Accused of corruption.

Retired, 1972. Replaced by Shevardnadze.
