1907 graduate Department of Natural History, Physico-Mathcmatical Faculty, Moscow University.
1907-1914 postgraduate work. Chair of Botany, Moscow University. From 1914 associate professor, and from 1918 professor, Moscow University.
1923-1946 founder and head, Chair of Geobotany, Moscow State University. Taught contemporaneously at Moscow Advanced Courses for Women (1908-1918), Moscow Mining Academy (1920-1925), Timiryazev Agric Academy (1923-1924), Moscow Geodetic Institute (1930-1932), et cetera Led geobotanical expeditions in Tambov Province (1913-1915), Kursk Province (1919), Moscow Oblast (1925-1931), Gorky Oblast (1925-1929), Kalinin Oblast (1936) and Turkmenia (1942).
Made major contribution to development of phytocoenology (study of plant communities). Investigated and developed methods of studying morphology and dynamics of plant communities. Classified steppe vegetation.
Compiled survey maps of vegetation in the European and Asian Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and maps of contemporary restored flora in Moscow and Gorky Oblasts. Wrote over 100 sci works and textbooks on phytocoenology and plant geography, some of them in French and German.
