1891 graduate Faculty of Oriental Languages, Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1896 lecturer, then professor, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1910-1913 correspondent member, Russian Academy of Sciences. 1912 founded and headed journal Mir islama.
In 1920's chairman, Collegium of Orientalists, Academy of Sciences. From 1925 ed, journal Zapiski Kollegii vostokovedev. 1926-1929 assistant chairman, Academy of History of Material Culture and, from 1928, director of its Turkological Office.
Also edited collection Iran. Helped found Centr Asian Institute in Tashkent and worked on commission for latinizing Arabic scripts of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics peoples. Attended international congresses and conventions of orientalists and read lectures at university in Britain, Turkey, et cetera
Author of over 400 works on history, geography, culture and religion of peoples of Near and Middle East, including Centr Asia. Research distinguished by great erudition.
