BOGDAN, Vasiliy was born on April 23, 1865 in village Sosnovka, now Sumy Oblast.
1892 graduate Petrovsk Agric and Forestry Academy. From 1892 founder-researcher, Valuyki (Kostychev) Experimental Station, Samara Province. Under threat of dismissal for "political unreliability,” moved to Orenburg.
1893-1907 senor agronomist, Turgay-Ural Resettlement Area. 1910 founded Krasnokutsk Experimental Station. 1911 appointed professor, Novo-Alcksandriysk Agric Institute, but Minister of Education refused to confirm his appointment.
1917-1921 professor of agric, Saratov, and from 1921 Kuban’ Agric Institute. Made geobotanical studies of virgin steppe and fallow lands. Devised methods for experimental work in steppe conditions.
Established role of micro-relief in soil formation. Refined theory of earlynaturing fallow land and established the importance of grass sowing to increase the cropping of xeric areas. 1898-1900 introduced use of wild crested wheat grass (Agropyron cristalum), later used as basic gramineous component for grass mixtures in steppe areas.
