GERMOGEN, Vasiliy was born in 1880 in village Kumylzhinskaya, now Volgograd Oblast. Son of a psalm-reader.
Graduate Don Theological Seminary. 1916 graduate Kazan’ Theological Seminary.
1907 entered priesthood. 1916 ordained monk with name of Germogen. 1917 attended All-Russian Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and ordained Bishop of Kazan’ and Sviyaga.
From November 1947 professor, Chair of Occidental Religions and rector, Moscow Theological Academy. Simultaneously rector, Moscow Theological Seminary. 1948 speaker and chairman, Commission for the Sciences Evaluation of Reports, Moscow conference of bishops and representative of 11 autocephalous Orthodox churches.
1948 also delivered policy statement on theology training and the attitude of the Moscow Patriarchy to ecumenism. 1949 ordained Bishop of Krasnodar and Kuban’. 1950 member, Russian Orthodox Church deleg to Palestine.
1951 deleg, 3rd All-Union Peace Conference, Moscow. 1953 accompanied dcleg from Antiochian Orthodox Church on tour of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. 1954 ordained metropolitan and appointed Exarch of Moscow Patriarchy of North and South America (Aleutia and North America).
