1917 graduate Petrograd University.
1924-1928 taught at Leningrad University and Institute of Art History. 1916 first work published. Wrote many studies on Dostoevsky, Pushkin, poets of the period, and the Petrashevskiy poets.
Edited and compiled anthology Poety-petrashevtsy (The Petrashevskiy Poets) (1940). Did research on ancient Russian lit, especially the history of Russian manuscripts and local legends. Wrote various chapters on ancient Russian lit in Istoriya russkoy literatury (A History of Russian Literature) (1941-1946).
Translated and annotated Stendhal’s works.
