1887 graduate Petrine Agric and Forestry Academy (now Timiryazev Agric Academy, Moscow).
1888 went abroad to complete his studies. Met Pasteur in France and studied microbiology at Pasteur’s Laboratory. In Munich worked at German agronomist East. Volny’s laboratory.
1891 returned to Russia. 1892 began to lecture on agric at Petrine Academy. 1894 defended master’s thesis on “Opyt issledovaniya v oblasti mekhanicheskogo analiza pochv” (Practical Research in the Mechnical Analysis of Soils).
From 1894 head Chair of Agric and Agric Machinery, Petrine Academy. Also headed Experimental Field and Seed Control Station. From 1899 lectured on soil science
Led a number of soil field study trips in Lyubertsy, Lyublino, Kara-Kum Steppe, Chakva, Azer, et cetera During 1905-1906 Revol rector, Moscow Agric Institute. Forced to resign after considerable friction with the authorities.
1922-1925 rector, Moscow’s Timiryazev Agric Academy. Worked for State Learned Council, People's Commissariat of Education. Also worked for State Planning Committee and People's Commissariat of Agriculture
Outlined his theory of a single, cohesive soil formation process in his work Pochvovedeniye (Soil Science) (1914-1924). 1919 published Participant 1 and 1922 — Participant 2 of his work Obshcheye zemledeliye (General Farming), outlining the principles of his so-called grass-arable system. 1927 published his work Obshcheye zemledeliye s osnovami pochvovedeniya (General Farmin with the Principles of Soil Science).
