Vasily Nikolaevich Berkh was a Russian historian of the fleet and marine geographical discoveries, colonel. He participated in the first Russian circumnavigation of the world (on the Neva ship under the command of Yury Lisyansky, 1803-1806) and in the Russian-English expedition to Holland in 1799. He was engaged in historical, archaeographic and archaeological researches.

Vasily Nikolaevich Berkh was born on May 8, 1780, in Moscow City, Russian Federation in the family of noblemen.

Education

Vasily Nikolaevich graduated from the Sea Cadet Corps in 1799 with the rank of midshipman and enlisted in the Baltic Fleet.

Career

Vasily Nikolaevich Berkh left the fleet due to illness (1809), he entered the civil service as an adviser to the Perm Treasury Chamber (1810). From 1821 he served in Saint Petersburg in the Admiralty Department, sorting the archive, and from 1827 until the end of his life Vasily Nikolaevich was in charge of the Hydrographic Depot of the Marine Ministry.

Vasily Nikolaevich made his debut in publishing translations of English books "Life and Acts of Lord Wiscon Nelson". Soon he established himself as a hard worker of Russian scientific literature.
