Graduated from natural science branch of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University (1871).
Since 1872 was a curator of Geology Museum at the same place. Since 1883 was a professor, since 1892 was the Director of Novoalexandriysk Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, since 1895 was the Head of the 1st in Russia Department of Agrology at the same place. Since 1892 the Head of the "Special Expedition of the Forest Department on Testing and Accounting of Different Methods and Techniques of Forestry in Steppes of Southern Russia".
The founder of domestic agrology. Started investigation of Russian black earth according to the task of the Liberal Economic Society since 1877. In 1889 at the Paris World Exposition the collection of Russian soil, including black earth was demonstrated. Also the works of Dokuchaev which were honored by gold medal were published.19 works of the "Special Expedition" were published under command of Dokuchaev.Together with N. M. Sibirtsev, K. D. Glinka, P. V. Ototsky was implementing activities to fight with dry hot winds and to save soil fertility on the territory of Voronezh governorate, in the region of Kamennaya Step after drought and hunger in 1891-1892. G. F. Morozov continued works on creating wind-belts in Voronezh governorate that Dokuchaev started. In 1911 Kamennostepnaya experimental station named after Dokuchaev was created. Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture of Central-Black Earth Lane named after Dokuchaev has been working since 1956 in Talovsky district. In honor of Dokuchaev scientific contribution Academy of Sciences of USSR created a medal and a prize named after his name.A street in Voronezh named after Dokuchaev.
