Music history was a second career for Lawrence but one she pursued until her death. She left unfinished the third volume of her most recent project, Strong on Music, a look at music in nineteenth-century New York. The first volume, Resonances, was published in 1991, and the second, Reverberations, was published in 1995. Lawrence began her musical career at New York’s Juilliard School and was a concert pianist for forty years. She retired from concerts in 1965 and devoted herself to music history. She played a large role in the ragtime revival of the mid-1970s after she compiled, edited and produced The Collected Works of Scott Joplin, one of her best-known works.
